Easy Ways To Make Money By Scanning Your Receipts

I'm ALWAYS on the lookout for ways to be more frugal and save money but with a family of four, I still find myself making quite a bit of purchases. One of my favorite (and super easy peasy) ways to get a bit back on what I'm already spending is by submitting receipts on various apps. For some of these it takes longer than others to accumulate much reward, but seriously.. If you have to spend it and can get some back with minimal effort, why not?

I've created a list of my 9 favorite apps below to get you started! :)

1.) Ibotta
(iOS + Android)

Many of you may already be aware of this or even currently use it, but if you happen to not be a current user, check out my earnings from sporadic use:

Obviously, if you shop a lot and stay on top of the app you can earn much more. 

With Ibotta, you can choose from a ton of rebate offers for over 300 local and online stores nationwide. For grocery purchases (which I use the most), you can often even get rebates on produce or "any purchase" in addition to the brand name offers. Some of the stores included are Walmart, Kroger, Whole Foods, and recently added Trader Joe's! Take a photo of your receipt after shopping and select your completed offers to receive credit.  

For online retailer rebates, you just follow the link within the app when making your purchase. These stores include Amazon, Groupon, Jet, Boxed, and maaaaaany more!

The minimum amount needed to cash out is $20, and you can receive your money via PayPal, Venmo, or choose from a huge list of gift cards.

2.) Receipt Hog
(iOS + Android)

Receipt Hog has been around for a bit and has made many changes since, mostly positive. While the money earned does add up somewhat slowly, it takes very little time to earn. Simply take a photo of any receipt (including grocery, gas stations, restaurants, wherever!) within 14 days and wait for it to be accepted. The app now also has a slots game you may play after you've earned spins from select purchases for a chance at winning more. Every receipt submitted also enters you into a sweepstakes.

Cash-outs are available with a minimum of $5, or 1000 points, via PayPal. You may also choose an Amazon e-gift card or a magazine subscription. There are no referral codes necessary!

3.) ReceiptPal
(iOS + Android)

With ReceiptPal you simply snap a picture of your receipts, filling score cards for points to redeem later. Valid receipts can be from any merchant for consumer goods, travel, & entertainment and just need to be submitted within the same month as purchase. One of my favorite features of this app is that unlike Receipt Hog who gives you a one-time bonus for connecting an Amazon account, ReceiptPal will reward you per-purchase (as well as for other online merchants) if you connect your email! You can also submit e-receipts via email. 

Every four receipts will also give you one entry into their weekly sweepstakes. The only complaint I've had is that it is difficult to take photos of long receipts, as the app does not allow for multiple photos for a closer shot. Rewards may be redeemed beginning at only 400 points, and you can choose gift cards for Amazon, Best Buy, CVS, Gamestop, Starbucks, Visa, and others! There's no referral code needed!

4.) Walmart Savings Catcher
(iOS + Android)

I honestly do not shop at Walmart super frequently, but this feature on the Walmart app has still been worthwhile! After scanning the barcode at the bottom of your receipt, they will alert you if any items purchased were found elsewhere for less and pay your the difference! Currently you can transfer your money to a Walmart e-gift card or a BlueBird gift card. No referral necessary.

5.) Checkout51
(iOS + Android)

Much like Ibotta, Checkout51 gives you money back on selected purchases, though these rebates are grocery only. The minimum payout is $20. There is currently no referral program.

6.)SavingStar 
(iOS + Android)

The SavingStar app gives discounts on a decent amount of grocery items for many different stores. For some you can snap a photo of your receipt for credit, and for others your can receive credit with a linked store card. Minimum cash out amount is $5, and you can receive your earnings via PayPal, bank account, or donate to charity! No referral needed.

7.)MobiSave
(iOS + Android)

For me, I find MobiSave hit-or-miss in the item selection offered for rebates. There have been many items that have been worth my taking a second to glance at the app, though, and I'm hoping as time goes on that they will have more offers available. One perk for this particular app is that if you have ANY applicable items you've purchased, there is no minimum payout amount to meet and the funds are immediately transferred to your PayPal account after approval! You do have to submit your receipts before each individual offer ends, so it's better to snap a pic sooner than later.

8.) BerryCart
(iOS + Android)

BerryCart is much like Checkout51 but for organic, gluten-free, non-gmo, and vegan / vegetarian items.. and if you happen to purchase such items, you know how welcomed any discount can be! ;P This is the ONLY app I've gotten a rebate for tofu on, so I promise, if you eat the crunchy hippie plant-based foods you will want to check this out. Retailers include Whole Foods, Sprouts, Walmart, Target, Safeway, Kroger and others. After submitting a receipt for a rebate, you'll receive your money either through PayPal or a selected gift card within 24 hours!

9.) Fetch Rewards

(iOS + Android)

With Fetch Rewards, you can earn on special offers and a huge list of brands (which include Boca and Naked juices, yaaay!). You have 14 days to scan your receipt in and save your points for MasterCard/Visa cards or a gazillion gift cards. No exaggeration, there's SO MANY options for redemption on this one! I'm new to using this one, so I cannot give a guesstimate on how long it takes to reach the minimum for a reward.. but it does look really promising.
